Co-Generation
Looking at the power deficit the country is facing cogeneration technology seems to be one of the option left with us. Cogeneration makes sense both from macro and micro prospective. At the macro level, it allows a part of the financial burden of the national power utility to be shared by the private sector. At the micro level, the over all energy bill of users can be reduced, particularly when there is a simultaneous need for both power and heat at the site and a rational energy tariff is practiced in the country.
Cogeneration is a thermo-dynamically efficient use of fuel. In separate production of electricity, some energy must be rejected as waste heat, but in cogeneration this thermal energy is put to good use.
On the basis of this approach, financialOn the basis of this approach, financial position of the mills and the boiling house requirement (exhaust), The Sonipat Coop. Sugar Mill Sonipat installed the smallest and most lowest steam pressure cogeneration plant in 2004-05. This plant was commissioned and synchronized with UHBVNL grid on 30.11.2005 by replacing its old 1.5 MW power turbine. One 3 MW, 440v, 50HZ, 20 kg steam pressure was installed during the crushing season 2004-05. When this plant was commissioned the average electrical load of the plant 1350-1450 KW and after exporting the power of 700-800 KW, it was 2000-2100 KW. At this load boiling house consumed all the exhaust steam and mill exported power year wise as under. Whereas the per unit rate for export was very minimum i.e. Rs. 2.35/- KWH.

But during the last 2-3 crushing seasons mill increased some electrical load for increasing the efficiency of the plant i.e. better cane preparations, waste heat recovery system and strengthening of some machineries. Due to which mill has sufficient exhaust steam for boiling house. Therefore mill did not run the co-gen plant because of house requirement and the rate of the bagasse, which was also very high. Sugar Mill, Sonipat has the highest bagasse sale realization during the year 2011-12 in Haryana Coop. Sector.
